LAKE EUSTIS INSTITUTE TO OFFER SERIES OF NONPROFIT SEMINARS
Author Debra Berg Will Present Solutions to Most Commonly Asked Questions
Eustis, FL, March 19, 2008 ---
Debra Berg, author of The Power of One, Unsung Everyday Heroes Rescuing American Cities and Lake County resident sees nonprofit organizations as civic enterprises that can benefit from the successes of other nonprofits. “Proven solutions to shared challenges exist”, according to Berg.
Berg’s research for her book indicates that most social entrepreneurs are isolated from one another. They are focused on their service and often have neither the time nor the resources to connect with other nonprofits in their community or across the United States, even when they suspect that other organizations might have a solution to a challenge they are facing. Her goal is to end this isolation by establishing a National Institute for Civic Enterprise (NICE) that accelerates nonprofit success through online information access.
In February 2008, Debra Berg and the Lake Eustis Institute presented an introductory seminar to Lake County nonprofits. From the priorities and questions discussed in that seminar, Berg and the institute have developed a series of in-depth seminars for nonprofits designed to provide solutions to the most asked questions. The first seminar on April 11th is: Grow your Mission with a New Networking Strategy. Other seminars and their dates are:

LAKE EUSTIS INSTITUTE'S SPRING DABBLERS' SERIES BEGINS
~ The Community is invited to "Dip Into" a Variety of Programs
Eustis, FL, March 3, 2008 ---
Trout Lake Nature Center is partnering with the Lake Eustis Institute this spring to offer nature lovers the opportunity to dabble in the beauty of Central Florida guided by the Center's naturalists and expert instructors.
Starting on March 7th, Trout Lake and the Institute will offer three outstanding programs. The March 7th program will explore bears in the Ocala Forest. Participants will meet at Trout Lake Nature Center, 520 CR 44, Eustis, at 9:00 AM. Each person will drive his own vehicle to the forest where Florida Fish & Wildlife Commission Biologist Tom Schupe will lead a tour of Juniper Wilderness. Since Schupe deals with nuisance bears, he knows where to find them. This program will require walking on uneven ground and stepping over obstacles. The cost is $7 per person not including lunch at the Mason Jar in Umatilla after the trip.
The Lake Norris Conservation Area is the destination for the March 14th canoe trip. Canoes will wind among the cypress trees along the shores of Lake Norris. These cypress trees are the nesting site for one of the largest osprey populations in the area. Participants will meet at Trout Lake Nature Center on CR 44 in Eustis at 8:00 AM and each person will drive his own vehicle to Lake Norris. The cost is $7 and people will get their feet wet. Plan on devoting 5 hours to this experience, but you will only paddle for 2 miles.
Lavon Silvernell, Trout Lake Nature Center naturalist will lead a tour of the Center on April 18th in search of wild edibles. She will point out plants used by early settlers as well as plants that will add zest to modern meals. Following the walk, participants will head to nearby historic Clifford House for a light lunch, including some of the wild edibles. After lunch, members of the Eustis Historical Society will conduct a tour of this historic house. Meet at Trout Lake Nature Center on CR 44 in Eustis at 9:00 AM. The program will last five hours and the fee is $15 which includes lunch.
Lake Eustis Institute is also partnering with Bay Street Players, The Lake Eustis Arts Accord and the Lake Eustis Sailing Club to offer programs this spring for the adventurous who have always wanted to try something, but who have never felt comfortable signing up for a series of serious classes. These programs give one the opportunity to try something just once. If it is appealing, then there are additional opportunities to explore sailing on Lake Eustis, the theater (backstage and on-stage), creating pottery or learning how to paint abstract art.
The Trout Lake Nature Center programs are extremely popular and participation is limited. It is suggested that interested people call the Institute at 352.357.3995 immediately to reserve a space. More information is available by phone or at the Institute website: www.lakeeustisinstitute.org.
"Play" at the Theater during LEI's Spring Dabbler Series
~ Bay Street Players Revises Dates and Times for Its Dabbler Programs
Eustis, FL, February 22, 2008 ---
In an effort to accommodate busy schedules, Bay Street Players has revised the dates and times of the programs it offers this spring through the Lake Eustis Institute’s Dabbler Series.
LEI has partnered with various community organizations to offer programs in which the community can “try out” or ‘dabble” in things to see if there is a good fit.
“When most people think of the theater, they think of actors”, according to Bay Street Players Executive Director Elizabeth Scholl. “But there is so much more to the theater, including history and all of the backstage activities”, she added.
The theater has always been considered the most accessible of all the fine art forms. To enjoy theater, a person does not need advanced education or talent, or literacy. All people need according to Scholl, “is the willingness to let the play take over their consciousness for a few hours”.
Bay Street Players is offering the following programs through the Lake Eustis Institute’s Dabbler Series. To enroll in one or more of the programs call the Institute at 352.357.3995 or visit the website at www.lakeeustisinstitute.org.

GET YOUR HANDS DIRTY IN A "FUN" WAY
~ Dabble in Pottery at the Lake Eustis Institute's Spring Dabbler Series
Eustis, FL, February 19, 2008 ---
How many of us have thought it might be fun to take a block of clay, a pail of water, and a potter’s wheel and create something --- a bowl, a pot, a pitcher, a platter, even a human figure?
The Lake Eustis Institute is partnering with the Lake Eustis Arts Accord this spring to offer pottery lessons to anyone who ever wanted to dabble with clay. Master potters are on hand to instruct and encourage, and at the end of the lesson the student gets to take the creations home.
Pottery has been made of over 30,000 years. It is believed the earliest pottery was formed from earth and fired on bonfires. 10,000 years ago the Mesopotamian's created the potter’s wheel and baked their pottery in ovens. This ancient art has not changed much since then, and people still find the creation of pottery a very satisfying experience.
The first pottery class offered by the Lake Eustis Arts Accord will be Saturday March 8 from 1-5 PM at the Arts Accord Pottery Studio, 205 N. Grove Street, Eustis. The cost is $100 for four hours of instruction, all supplies, and whatever the student creates. Class size is limited. Call the Lake Eustis Institute at 352.357.3995 to enroll.

Tzimon Barto grew up in Eustis. He developed The Barto Prize as his way of giving back to his community. Lake Eustis Institute's Great Ideas Discussion Group resumes after holidays
Eustis, FL, January 3, 2008 ---
On January 15, the Great Ideas Discussion Group will continue its discussion of readings dealing with the formative documents and writings of the United States of America.
For those who have wondered about the beginning of our democracy and how our thoughts may have changed or how they have remained the same, these discussions will answer some of your questions. For those who are history buffs, these discussions offer an opportunity to contribute your knowledge. Complete novices are also encouraged to attend, because they often ask the most compelling questions.
The January 15th discussion will be on readings from The Federalist, Essays 1,2,6,9,10, and 31. Reading selections from The Federalist is helpful to understanding the intentions of the original framers of the Constitution, since no one was satisfied with the document created by the Philadelphia Convention of 1787. The Federalist is a compilation of a series of newspaper essays written by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay as response to both critics and friends of the Constitution.
Hosted by the Lake Eustis Institute in the institute’s classroom at 135 North Grove Street in Eustis, these free-wheeling discussions are from 4 to 5:30 PM. They are open to the public and are free. The group meets for 90 minutes on the third Thursday of each month.
In 2007 the group covered the Declaration of Independence, Articles of Confederation and The Constitution of the United States of America. In 2008 the topics will be The Federalist,
Tocqueville’s Democracy in America, Dred Scott vs Sanford, Lincoln, On the Dred Scott Decision and Douglas, The Constitution of the United States, is it Pro-Slavery or Anti-Slavery?

Jacobs, Rector, St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Eustis, will be on January 21, 7 to 9 PM in the Eustis Community Center, 601 Northshore Drive, Eustis. Lake
Eustis Institute Restructures and Renames Center for Theology
and Science
Eustis,
FL February 15, 2007 ---
The
Lake Eustis Institute has restructured its successful philosophical
seminar series in order to appeal to a broader segment of
the community. Previously open only to people with
advanced degrees, the Center for Theology and Science has
been renamed the Great Ideas Discussion Group and its seminars
are now open to anyone interested in participating, regardless
of educational level achieved.
The seminars are designed to suit the needs of busy people
who, immersed in careers and families, still value serious
conversation with their peers about ideas that have challenged
humankind through the ages.
The seminars address fundamental questions of the human
condition through a close reading and discussion of timeless
literature, philosophy and political discourse. Seminar members
meet once a month for 90 minutes to discuss one of these
texts. Discussions are exploratory and no previous knowledge
of the author, text, or subject is required.
The theme of the new seminar series will be The Individual.
The readings selected trace different ideas about how we
set ourselves apart as individuals in the context of family,
friends and society. The works explore themes such as independence
and self-control, intellect versus passion, the dangers of
conformity and the fear of loneliness. The first three readings
are:
March 20 – The Apology of Socrates by
Plato
April 17 – On Suicide and On
the Immortality of the Soul by David Hume
May 15 – Self-Reliance by
Ralph Waldo Emerson
A complete description of the Great Ideas
Discussion Group seminars is available on the Institute’s
web site www.lakeeustisinstitute.org.
Interested individuals should register by March 6th in order
to complete the required reading for the first seminar. A copy
of the reading can be obtained at the Institute office, 129
N. Grove St., Eustis. Register on-line or by calling

The
search for extra-terrestrial intelligence is in high gear.
How will humans face this potential challenge?
Eustis, FL, January 30, 2007 --- On Wednesday,
February 21, Virginia Barker, executive director of the Lake
Eustis Institute, will present a paper to the Institute’s
Center for Civil Discourse exploring some of the philosophical
and theological implications of a discovery of extra terrestrial
intelligence. While no evidence for life on other planets
within earth’s solar system or in other galaxies has
yet been found, serious scientific efforts are being made.
The most notable is the Search for Extra-terrestrial Intelligence
(SETI) initiated by NASA in the mid- 1980’s
and continued as a not-for-profit research institute since
1994. Many scientists believe the odds are very much
in favor of finding life on other planets. Some scientists
go so far as to postulate the possibility of intelligent
life.
If humans are found to be no longer unique in the Universe,
what are the implications to how we define our purpose in
life and to what some of us see as our relationship with
a supernatural deity? According to Eric Lerner, “Today,
another scientific revolution is beginning, one that may
change our view of the cosmos… If the universe is
truly infinite in time and space, then the implications go
well beyond cosmology to our view of nature, to religion,
philosophy and society as a whole”.
Recently renamed, the Center for Civil Discourse was formerly
called the Center for Theology & Science. Academicians
from a variety of disciplines meet every third Wednesday
from 2 to 3:30 PM in the Institute’s Classroom, 135
North Grove Street, Eustis to critically discuss timely topics.
At each meeting, a member of the group presents a paper
on a topic of interest. The paper is presented in the
first part of the meeting and then is discussed by the panel
members. Each panel member brings a perspective from
his or her academic area. The Center is always looking for
new members. To explore joining the group discussions,
visit the Institute’s website at www.lakeeustisinstitute.org or
call Virginia Barker at 352.357.3995.
In March, Dr. Robert Hart will give a paper on Healing and
in April, The Rev. John Jacobs will discuss Crime and Punishment.
The public is invited to attend these meetings. If there
is time after the group discussion, questions from the audience
will be heard. Please call the Lake Eustis Institute, 352.357.3995,
if you wish to attend.
